Sierra Service Project 09
Empowering Young People to Put Faith Into Action
Leaving Friday, June 26, 13 high school youth and 3 adults will be traveling from Santa Rosa to a Navajo reservation in Arizona to participate with Sierra Service Project, an organization that provides opportunities for youth to explore God's love and call for us on earth. As they travel, they’ll pass through the Grand Canyon, an amazing place that many of our youth and a few of our adults have never seen before. Once they arrive at the reservation, they will be joined by youth groups from all over the western states for an unforgettable week of serving, learning, worship, and fellowship! Working on homes in the local community, they’ll do everything from roofing and painting, to building wheelchair ramps and porches. Although youth come to SSP with little or no construction experience, they nonetheless accomplish a great deal.
You can send off our youth with your good wishes if you come to the VBS Open House Campfire
on Friday, June 26, 5:30 pm, at Stony Point.
Begun in 1975, Sierra Service Project was inspired by and modeled after Appalachian Service Project. Originally founded by several United Methodist Church ministers, SSP is now an independent non-profit organization. We maintain a close affiliation with the United Methodist Church, and we also draw participants from a number of other denominations. SSP's "traditional" youth program is centered around youth groups, and a young person must be part of a group to attend.
