OLDER AMERICANS IN MAY

We honor older Americans in May by building awareness around the theme of Working Together for Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities. Our church benefits tremendously from our growing population of older adults; they represent one of our greatest resources here at FUMC. Our church is supported as they provide thousands of hours of volunteer service through committees, ideas, gifts, talents, hard labor and a variety of other arrangements. They enhance the position of our church in the community as well as our personal lives by sharing and transferring knowledge of cultures, values, and life experiences among generations. Thankfully, their contributions will continue to flourish as future elders promise to be among the most active and engaged older adult populations in our Nation’s history.

During this month of May we will bring attention to the issues that affect older adults in the following ways:

  1. Sundays, May 18th (Stony Point) and 25th (Montgomery) Pastor Greg Bergquist will preach on the topic of older adults.
  2. There will be a health fair after each of these services where community senior service providers will present information and resources.
  3. There will be presentation by a community expert speaking on an issue that creates better care and reinforces a healthier lifestyle for all ages.

Working together, we can improve older adults’ overall quality of life by helping them:

  • Make behavioral changes that reduce risk of disease, disability, and injury.
  • Obtain tools they need to make informed decisions about, and gain better access to, existing health and long-term care options in their communities.
  • Have more options to avoid placement in nursing homes and remain at home as long as possible

We celebrate Older Americans throughout the year because they touch our lives. By helping them we can improve the health and well being of our church family and pave the way for future generations to do the same.
